I first found Robin Lim's book "After the Baby's Birth... A Women's Way to Wellness: A Complete Guide for Postpartum Women" in 2000 when I was pregnant with my first baby. I was working as a birth and postpartum doula, as well as a pregnancy massage therapist in Seattle, WA and knew well the importance of holistic postpartum support. Robin's book was deeply nurturing and supportive for mothers in the important, and all too overlooked essential time after birth. Reading it gave me a sense of calm and nourishing support vital for a first time mother, and reinforced the importance of the postpartum work I was involved with in my community with other families.
Robin continues to be a champion for mothers and babies around the world today. She continues to raise awareness about vital issues facing women and children in childbirth and the critical time postpartum. In this video below you can hear Robin talk about the super essential immediate postpartum moments involving the care of the umbilical cord and placenta.
The placenta is an organ of life-giving energy as well as deep wisdom. It is to be honored and allowed it's life-force to transfer to the child through delayed cutting of the umbilical cord. With my first baby I practiced delayed cord clamping, waiting to cut the cord until 45 minutes after he was born and it was no longer pulsating. With my second baby we did a full lotus birth, keeping the cord intact and attached to the placenta until it detached cleanly from his navel. The lotus birth was a peaceful profound experience which I highly recommend and will write more about at a later time...
